AAPIs: The Invisible Americans?

Originally Aired on September 4, 2024

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are the “Invisible Americans.” We are invisible to American brands and major advertisers. Of the $659 billion of dollars being spent on paid media and advertising virtually ZERO is being spent on reaching AAPIs. Only a fraction of one percent is spent on communicating to AAPIs; for every dollar spent on advertising in America, only 5 cents is spent on multicultural — 2.5 is spent on Latinos and 1.5 is spent on African Americans leaving virtually nothing on AAPIs (only 0.15 cents ).

The ramifications on the lack of media spend in the AAPI community are obvious and apparent. AAPIs are the fastest growing and third largest ethnic group in the country – totaling around 7 percent of the overall population and growing. Physiologically the lack of attention and dedicated resources belittles the fact that we are neglected in America. While the overall ethnic media spend is low, the fact that AAPIs are only 0.15% is unjustifiable in a society that touts diversity, equity and inclusion. Furthermore, the negative effects on AAPI publishers and agencies are undeniable.

Learn what we must do to change this dynamic and fight for our fair share of resources and finding our voices in America.
