3AF 2019 Asian Marketing Summit

  • The 3AF 2019 Asian Marketing Summit featured our first-ever Asian media fair, spotlighting the power of Asian media. Various Asian media representatives set up exhibit tables and interacted with attendees. The media fair was held immediately prior to the 3AF Summit’s opening night reception.
  • 3AF founders kicked off the summit as the opening session. They shared their insights on the past, the present, and their visions for the future. Pictured left to right are Eliot Kang; Shelley Yamane; Julia Huang; Zan Ng and Bill Imada.
  • Throughout the day long summit, attendees were excited to learn from the day’s subject matter experts who shared their thoughts on everything from virtual reality and Asian media consumption habits to the upcoming U.S. 2020 Census, Asians in Canada, youth audience and entertainment; international brand implications, the Asian digital consumer and more.
  • Iris Yim, 3AF Vice President and Chair of the 3AF Research Committee, gave an overview of the 3AF’s second and latest marketing research study covering Asian American media consumption habits. The study is available for purchase here: http://www.3af.org/3af-research/2019/
  • Mariko Carpenter, Vice President, Strategic Community Alliances, Nielsen was the lunch keynote speaker.
  • 3AF President Jay Kim served as the emcee for the summit.
  • Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed the delicious gourmet food, catered by the hotel.
  • Liz Riemersma, Dish Network/Sling TV’s Director of International Business, spoke about the changing media consumption habits of Asian customers and the global media landscape.
  • The summit included a session on “Reinventing the Game: Taking Asian American Marketing to the Next Level.” The session was moderated by 3AF Board member, Ernest Smyth, Research Director of KTSF, with panelists Julia Kang, Account Director, Admerasia and Jessica Peres, Marketing Analyst, State Farm.
  • A popular breakout session focused on how to resonate with the next generation of cultural influencers. Speakers included Robert Lundberg, Coo, China Lion Film Distribution; Jenn Lee Smith, Founder, Bewilder Films and Yoshi Sudarso, Actor. Michelle Sugihara, Executive Director of CAPE, served as the moderator.
  • Kallindi Mehta, Director, Strategic Insights, North America Division, Colgate-Palmolive, spoke about brand implications for Asian Americans and Asia.
  • The spotlight on Gen Z continued with a session on how to effectively reach young Asian Americans in a world of ethnic diversity but with lack of sustained representation. Panelists included left to right, Ros Cobarrubias, Global Head of Music and Talent, ABS-CBN Global; Tiffanie Marie, Influencer; and Eljay Feuerman, Director of Insights and Ideation, redefine. Nita Song, COO of IW Group moderated the session.
  • The summit’s closing session was entitled “The 2020 Census: Start Here to Shape Our Future for the Next 10 Years,” and featured panelists Daphne Kwok, VP, Multicultural Leadership for APIA strategy, AARP; Julie Lam; Director, U.S. Census; and Neil Ruiz, Associate Director of Global Migration and Demography, Pew Research Center. Tim Wang, Founder of TDW+Co served as moderator.
  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital was the charitable partner of the 3AF 2019 Excellence Awards Dinner. Pictured at the podium is Janice Lindsey, Senior Director, Regional Field Management. Awards were given out for 3AF creative campaign of the year, digital campaign of the year, media partner of the year, marketer of the year and new marketer of the year.
  • The highlight of the 3AF Excellence Awards Dinner was meeting Riku, a patient of St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. We were honored to meet Riku and his mother. In 2018, Riku’s life changed when his family learned he had a type of brain cancer called medulloblastoma. Riku’s doctors referred him to St. Jude Children’s Research, where his treatment will include six weeks of proton therapy and four rounds of chemotherapy. 3AF 2017 Asian Marketing Summit Educates Attendees About Asian American Consumers

  • Karthick Ramakrishnan, Professor and Associate Dean, School of Public Policy, University of California, Riverside, talked candidly about factors that limit Asian American leadership development and civic engagement and ways that we can overcome these barriers to unlock the true leadership potential of our communities.
  • Sharmila Fowler, Director of Strategy, Global Diversity, Inclusion and Strategic Engagement, McDonald’s Corporation, provided excellent tips on how to develop a business case for diversity and inclusion.
  • A highlight of the 3AF Summit was the delicious food, catered by Chef Roy Choi.

  • Pawan Dhingra, Professor and Chair of Sociology at Tufts University, spoke on the integral role Asian American small business entrepreneurs play in our socity.
  • Jackie Gagne, VP, HBO, discussed HBO’s progressive strategies to engage today’s multicultural viewers.
  • The Summit included a session on the importance of English language Asian media.
  • During the awards reception, attendees were anxious to find out who would win the coveted 24K gold plated 3AF Excellence Awards trophy.
  • Thomas Tran, retired US Army veteran and comedian served as the emcee for the 3AF’s Excellence Awards event.
  • Two new award categories were added, including 3AF PR Campaign of the Year. Winning the PR Award was AAAZA for their work on MoneyGram’s Cricket Bee.
  • IW Group, Inc. won the gold award for 3AF Creative Campaign of the Year for their work for client City of Hope.
  • Iris Yim, 3AF Vice President and President of Sparkle Insights, gave an overview of the 3AF’s inaugural media consumption study.
  • The rise of Korean drama was featured on day 2 of the Summit. Makers of the popular dramas from KBS, MBC and SBS discussed the influence and opportunities of Korean drama and why they are building a new online platform.
  • Kathy Cheng, Co-Founder, Selffii Intelligence, Inc. presented a session on culture, which is a pathway to unstated consumer preferences.
  • The Summit concluded with a fascinating panel of a new class of Asian film makers who are pursuing their visions and enabling more authentic storytelling and representation in the mainstream culture.

  • Suk Park, President and Co-Founder, Drama Fever, was the keynote speaker, and shared an inspiring story of his company’s rapid growth and success.
  • Mark Hugo Lopez, Director of Hispanic Research, The Pew Research Center, spoke about a recent report that shows that new immigration will drive the United States’ population growth over the next 50 years. Asian immigration will contribute to the majority of this growth.
  • Executives from Google discussed how their multicultural outreach has evolved to include Asian Americans, the leading segment of online shoppers.
